Protecting your baby can sometimes seem like a mission impossible. Here at We Buy Any House, we have compiled our top tips on how to completely baby-proof your home.

When Do I Need to Baby Proof My Home?

Although this is subjective to the individuals themselves, we recommend that you begin babyproofing your home throughout the duration of your pregnancy, as once your baby arrives, you’re going to be struggling for time! It’s vital that all babyproofing of the home is completed beforehand, as pretty much all household things can be a hazard to your baby.

What Are the Main Things to Babyproof in Your Home?

Everywhere in your home may need babyproofing, but there’s a few key areas that are perhaps a little more important. These include:

    • Ensuring that all chords, cables and wires are out of the way of the baby.
    • Covering any sharp corners of furniture are
    • Covering all plug sockets with covers.
    • Making sure all small items are out of reach for your baby as this can be a choking hazard for them.
    • Having all carbon dioxide, smoke detectors and alarms fitted in the property.
    • Be aware of the temperature of your radiators as this can be a potential burn injury for your child.
    • Don’t leave any windows unlocked as this could be a potential escape route for your child.

    Baby-Proofing the Cupboards:

Babies can be quite crafty and get into all the small places. Therefore, it’s a good idea to ensure that all your cupboards are properly baby-proofed. An easy way you can do this is by buying an adjustable locks or even having latch hooks!

Get to Grips with the Settings on Your Hot Water:

As babies are little beacons of curiosity, most things can be a danger to them- and one of the scariest and most hazardous things is the hot-water settings on your heater. Most experts would recommend keeping your water cooler set to less than 120 degrees, as if they manage to get their hands on it, it could lead to serious burn injuries.

    Baby Proofing the Landing:

Your landing can be quite a dangerous place for your baby. Infants and children are quite adventurous when it comes to climbing stairs, so it’s a good idea to make your landing as safe as possible for them. A few ways to do this are:

    • Install stair gates at both ends of the staircase.
    • Make sure your stairs are well-lit, so that there are no tripping hazards. You can do this by installing LED lights or spotlights.
    • Remove any objects from the stairs that are a tripping hazard.

    Baby Proofing the Kitchen:

Perhaps one of the most hazardous areas in the home, your kitchen is full of items that are dangers to your baby. To reduce the chance of a fatal accident happening in the kitchen, here are a few things you can do.

    • Lock away all sharp knives and other appliances such as kettles and irons- especially if they are within grabbing distance of your child.
    • Lock all cleaning products away and are out of reach.
    • Put safety catches on the fridge and freezer and low cupboard.
    • Never leave the washer or tumble dryer open in case your child climbs in.
